Stemilt Accepts Industry Award for Innovative Packaging

Stemilt’s award winning Piñata unistack display box on showcase at PMA’s Fresh Summit 2007.
WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Produce Marketing Association (PMA) selected Stemilt as a winner of their inaugural Impact Award: Excellence in Produce Packaging, for their new Piñata unistack display box. The award was accepted during PMA’s 2007 Fresh Summit International Convention and Exposition in Houston, Texas on October 13th.
Developed by the PMA Packaging Council, the Impact Award highlights companies who excel in one of five different categories. Stemilt won the merchandising / transportability category with their new unistack display box that is an apple carton and a display in one. Four other categories that make up the new award include: food safety / traceability, functionality / technology, marketing design / messaging and sustainability
According to Stemilt marketing director Roger Pepperl, “We are thrilled to be recognized by PMA with this award. Our vision of providing a box that can go through any distribution system but also can turn into a display has been achieved. Looking beyond the warehouse side, this is a turnkey solution that’s easy for produce managers to put up in their stores.”
In a PMA press release regarding the award, PMA president Bryan Silbermann was quoted as saying, “Through our consumer research we’ve found that packaging is a critically important vehicle that can be used to satisfy our customers’ needs for information, as well as a connection to their produce providers. The Impact Award winners’ innovations in packaging most effectively and creatively respond to those needs.”
Sesame Street characters Elmo and Abby Cadabby were used on the Pinata unistack display box, along with a bright red background color to add to the flair of this inventive design. “In addition to developing a truly innovative box, we made sure graphically it would make a statement at the store level as the ultimate goal is to drive sales for our customers. There was no question in our minds that Elmo and Abby were the ones to help us meet that objective,” Pepperl stated.
