Cameo apples were discovered in the early 1980's by Darrell Caudle from Dryden, Washington. Cameo apples are believed to be a cross between Red and Golden Delicious apples, since Caudle was growing both varieties nearby.

Originally named Carousel, the apple's owners changed its name in the late 1980's to draw on the beauty of elegant cameo jewelry. Cameo was later trademarked by CAMA, the marketing association that helps bring this apple to market.

Stemilt harvests Cameo apples in late September and October. Cameo apples resist browning when sliced making them a great choice for fresh salads.
