Golden Delicious apples were discovered in the early 1900’s on the Mullins’ family farm in Clay County, West Virginia. In 1916, Stark Brothers Nursery introduced the apple commercially as a companion to Red Delicious, even though the two varieties are not related.

The parentage of Golden Delicious is unclear, but some think that it could be a relative of Golden Reinette or Grimes Golden. Golden Delicious is a mellow, sweet apple that thrives in eastern Washington’s arid climate. This variety was even a favorite of Stemilt’s late founder, Tom Mathison.
