Comice pears were first cultivated in the mid-1800’s near Angers, France. The formal name for this pear variety is Doyenne Du Comice. Though small in size, Comice pears are considered to be the one of the sweetest and juiciest of all pear varieties. The shape of Comice is unique among other pear varieties. They have a rotund body and a very short, well-defined neck. Comice pears are green in color, with an occasional red blush covering areas of the pear’s surface. As the fruit ripens, the skin takes on a yellow hue.
