Red Bartlett pears are often called "summer pears" because they are one of the first varieties to be harvested each August.

Red Bartlett pears were first discovered in 1938 as a bud sport growing on a regular Bartlett pear tree near Zillah, Washington. A bud sport is a naturally occurring transformation that occasionally develops on fruit trees. They typically go unnoticed, and even when discovered, the resulting fruit is not always commercially viable. However, the Red Bartlett sports on this pear tree were quite flavorful and marketable. With the exception of their color, Red Bartlett pears are identical to their yellow counterpart. They are bell-shaped with red stripes over a green background. The Red Bartlett variety has a classic pear flavor and smooth texture, making them excellent for fresh eating and cooking purposes. Stemilt harvests Red Bartlett pears in late August.
