D'Anjou pears are thought to have originated in the 1800's near Angers, France. The small letter “d” in front of Anjou means “of” or “from”. Hence, the d'Anjou is a pear from Anjou or Angers. Also called green d'Anjou, this pear variety is harvested green but its interior ripens over time into a sweet, juicy and flavorful pear.

D'Anjou pears were brought to the U.S. by Col. Marshall P. Wilder around 1842. The Anjou quickly became the standard for all winter pears because of its distinct flavor, versatility, and long shelf life.
