Pink Lady® brand is a selection from the Western Australia Department of Agriculture's apple breeding program. In 1973, researchers crossed the Golden Delicious and Lady Williams varieties to create this vibrantly pink apple. Pink Lady® brand was released for commercial production in Australia in 1989. The Australian Apple and Pear Growers Assoc. named the apple Pink Lady® brand and trademarked the term making it one of the few apples with a trademarked name.
Pink Lady® brand is a relatively new apple variety to the United States. Washington and California growers began planting the apple in the late 1990's, and plantings expanded as the variety became increasingly popular.
