Facts of Interest:  The Bartlett is a very popular pear in the United States. It has a rounded, bell-shaped bottom half, and is sweet and juicy for true dessert quality.

The Bartlett is also called the Williams pear in many countries. Discovered in 1765 by a schoolmaster in England named Mr. Stair, the Bartlett was first referred to as Stair's Pear. A nurseryman named Williams later acquired the variety, and introduced it to the rest of England naming it the Williams pear.

The Williams pear was first planted in 1799 at the Thomas Brewer Estate in Massachusetts. When Enoch Bartlett acquired the Brewer estate, he discovered the pear and decided to introduce it to the United States under his own name. In 1828, when new trees arrived from Europe, it was realized that Bartlett and Williams pears were one and the same. By then the Bartlett name was so familiar in the U.S. that the variety became known by that name only.

While Bartletts found in stores are sometimes green, with time they ripen to a bright yellow. Bartlett pears are best for pies, sauce, and fresh eating

Artisan Organics is Stemilt’s banner for organic tree fruits. This label adorns all packaging and price look-up (PLU) stickers on Stemilt’s organic apples, pears, cherries and stone fruits.

Stemilt began major investments in organic tree fruit production back in 1989. At the time, farming organically on a large-scale was unheard of, since there were so few organic applications available. Despite the challenges, Stemilt founder Tom Mathison knew there was potential for organics in the marketplace and continued preparing Stemilt for future growth.

Because of Tom’s foresight, Stemilt gradually increased its organic presence, and today, is one of the nation’s leading shippers of organic tree fruits. Try Artisan Organics for a unique flavor experience that only natural farming methods can deliver!

RipeRite Logo
Pears are unique, in that, they are harvested at full maturity, but still may not be perfectly ripe when you take them home from the store. Stemilt believes that consumers shouldn’t have to wait to enjoy their pears. Our conditioning program, called RipeRite™, gets the ripening process started so you have ready-to-eat pears every time you shop.
