Apple cider adds a fun twist to a classic fall dessert to make with kids – candy apples!

Instructions
  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment, and lightly brush the parchment with butter.
  2. Combine sugar, apple cider, corn syrup, and red or black food coloring in a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan.
  3. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-high.
  4. Boil until the syrup reaches 300°F to 310°F (hard-crack stage) on a candy thermometer, about 15 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, insert a wooden dowel or stick into the stem end of each apple, pushing halfway down.
  6. When syrup reaches the desired temperature, immediately remove from heat.
  7. Working quickly, dip apples, 1 at a time, in candy to coat.
  8. Transfer to baking sheet; let cool.

Candy apples can be made up to 4 hours ahead; keep at room temperature until ready to serve.
