How To Tell If A Pear Is Ripe…

1. Gently Press Your Thumb Near The Stem Of The Pear.

2. Feel For A Give To Pressure, If It Feels Soft, It’s Ready To Eat!

3. If It’s Firm As You Press, It Needs More Time To Ripen At Room Temperature.

Pro Tip: Don’t squeeze the middle of the pear; this can bruise it. A light press on the neck will tell you everything!

For Enjoying Pears Later…

Eat Them 3-4 Days After Purchase
This is the prime window for pear ripeness. After bringing your pears home, they should be fully ripe, juicy, and ready to eat by the 3rd or 4th day. Make sure to eat them quickly so they don’t spoil!

Pop Them In The Freezer!
Full of pears now but want to snack on them later? Freezing pears is another great way to help retain their sweet flavor. Slice and brush them with a lemon-water mixture to prevent browning and put them in freezer-safe bags in the freezer.

Make A Pear Syrup
For a tasty pear topping, boil 3 cups of water and 2 cups of sugar. Slice your pears and add to the mixture, then drain and cool. Place them in a bag and put them in the freezer.

Poach Your Pears
If you can boil water, you have the power to poach pears! You can poach pears by peeling and placing them into a poaching liquid of your choice and boiling them for about 20-30 minutes.

Can Them For Later
Peel, core, and slice ripe pears, then pack them into sterilized jars with a hot light syrup (or juice), leaving ½ inch headspace. Seal with lids and process jars in a boiling water bath for 20 minutes, then let cool before storing.

Pear FAQs:

With a swift upward lift, we pick pears just as they reach maturity. If we plucked pears ripe on tree, we’d have pear sauce on our hands (literally!)

Thanks to technology, we use controlled atmosphere (CA) storage rooms to store pears for longer. We place pears in cold rooms which slow the ripening process through temperature and humidity adjustments.

This is Kaolin clay, a natural orchard application that protects the fruit from getting sunburned (who knew fruits could get sunburnt?) Rinsing the pear under water and scrubbing with a cloth or towel should remove it!

There are many varieties out there, but some common ones include Bartlett, Anjou, Bosc, and Concorde.

You can ripen pears faster on the counter or in a paper bag. Just check them often, especially near apples or bananas. Want to slow it down? Pop them in the fridge!

Heirloom

There’s nothing like biting into a perfectly ripe pear. We want to take you back to that first juice-dripping experience full of so much flavor, you remember it to this day. At Stemilt, we aim to deliver unforgettable taste, time and again. For us, growing pears isn’t just a season, it’s a lifelong commitment.

Horizon

With the latest packing and ripening technology, we care for pears like they’re part of the family. One of the greatest challenges with pears is timing, and delivering them to stores at just the right stage of ripeness. That’s where we shine. At Stemilt, we’re committed to making every pear you enjoy as satisfying as the last.

Grower Mike Taylor is phenomenal at growing pears in both primary pear river valleys.

Prime Growing Regions

Home to multi-generational growers, the Wenatchee and Entiat River Valleys are truly the perfect place for growing premium-quality pears. Pears don’t thrive in wind and heat, and the mountains that form these valleys provide protection, clay-like soil, clean water run-off, and an aesthetically pleasing environment for pears to grow to their full potential.

The Four Seasons

Pears need all four seasons of fall, winter, summer, and spring to grow. In winter, the trees go dormant, while we prune for healthy growth. Springtime brings blossoms, and the occasional frost we counteract with wind and heat machines. By summer, the fruit is maturing, and we prune again to focus the tree’s energy on growing the perfect-sized pear. In fall, we harvest the crop and tend to the trees as leaves fall and they prepare for a long, winter’s nap. It’s a year-round cycle of care for fruit that’s full of flavor, color, and juice.
