How We Protect Cherries From Birds
At Stemilt, we rely on a few nature-friendly methods to encourage birds to move along and find a new favorite treat, outside the orchard!
Stemilt’s fourth-generation cherry grower and owner, Kyle Mathison, is the reason these extra-special cherries exist. With each pack of Kyle’s Pick® cherries, he promises an eating experience that you’ll remember. Our robust scoring process is how we’re able to deliver on his promise, and build trust with those who enjoy these sweet morsels by carefully picking only the biggest, sweetest, firmest, darkest cherries of the season. Kyle’s Pick® has nothing to do with quantity, but everything to do with selecting the very best of the crop.
Kyle’s Pick® cherries undergo a meticulous research and development and quality control ranking process to ensure each cherry meets our exact criteria for sweetness, firmness, size, consistency, and overall eating quality. The result: an ultra-premium cherry chosen for its standout taste.
When choosing a container of Kyle’s Pick® cherries from the grocery store shelf, look for bright green stems on the cherries, and a dark mahogany red skin. This indicates that the cherries are very fresh, and flavorful!
Cherries stay the freshest when kept in the fridge away from strong smells like onions or garlic. Keep them in their bag and wait to wash them until you’re ready to enjoy. Early washing can make them spoil faster!
Our favorite way to enjoy Kyle’s Pick® cherries is fresh out of the package, there’s nothing quite like
Aids In Recovery
Research says that consuming cherries in juice form can help aid in quicker recovery time from strenuous activities.
Decreases Inflammation
Cherries contain anthocyanins, a group of antioxidants that help decrease inflammation, support the body’s heart and surrounding tissues. Anthocyanins play a role in improving cognitive function and reduce pain from arthritis and gout.
Promotes Gut Health
Homemade cherry juice possesses multiple health benefits including the ability to lower cholesterol, level blood sugar, help digestion, and it may even aid with weight loss.
The season for Kyle’s Pick® starts in June and lasts through August.
Kyle’s Pick® cherries are grown in beautiful central Washington, where warm days and cool nights combine with volcanic soils to create the perfect growing conditions for delicious sweet cherries. Many of the cherries for Kyle’s Pick® come straight from Stemilt Hill in Wenatchee, Washington and are grown by Kyle himself!
Every day during the Washington cherry season, our R&D and field teams will scout orchard lots as potentials for producing cherries for the Kyle’s Pick® program. Leading up to harvest, quantitative metrics on fruit size, firmness, and sugar content are taken on those lots. Finally, an assessment is made prior to packing where our research and development team taste tests the cherries for flavor and texture, certifying them (or not) for Kyle’s Pick® packages.
Only the cherries that pass the taste-test go on to be packed under the Kyle’s Pick® brand! Once they make it to this point, they’re packed on Stemilt’s ultimate cherry packing line where each cherry travels through in-line hydrocooling to maintain peak freshness and flavor.
