Peaches and Nectarines and Vitamin C

|

We all know that citrus is high in vitamin C, but did you know that summer fruits like peaches and nectarines are good sources of vitamin C too? One large peach contains 19 percent of the daily recommended dose of vitamin C, while a large nectarine contains 14 percent. Apricots, another popular summertime fruit, also contain vitamin C.

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that keeps the body functioning normally and helps maintain a healthy immune system.

Vitamin C functions as an antioxidant, which fights free radicals from damaging the body’s cells during oxidation. High consumption of fruits and vegetables for antioxidants has been associated with a lower risk of most types of cancer. Vitamin C is believed to limit the formation of carcinogens, and case studies have found it to reduce the onset of cancers of the lung, breast, colon, rectum, stomach and esophagus.
