Pear butter is such a delicious spread for baked goods like biscuits, toast, pancakes, and our favorite: waffles! Because most the ingredients in this recipe can be found already in the kitchens, you can spice up any breakfast (dinner or lunch, we don’t judge) with a tasty pear butter.

You might be thinking: what the heck is pear butter? Think jam, but with much less sugar, smoother in texture, and no gelatin-like consistency. The great thing about making it yourself is you can choose how smooth or chunky you would like it to be. We like to blend until it is mostly smooth for easier spreading.

Pear butter is a delicious topping for most anything from bagels to parfaits. It’s also a great way to sneak in your fruit intake. If your kids are picky about eating their fruit, let them try a new way of eating them! This recipe is convenient because you can find most of the ingredients in your kitchen. It’s a simple treat that even the little ones can help make under an hour.

D’Anjou pears really make this recipe a hit for their super juicy citrus flavors. Some might say they even leave you feeling refreshed and energized after eating them, which is the perfect way to feel at the start of the morning! D’Anjou pears are sweet as they are citrusy. Did you know, Jelly Belly thought this pear had the perfect pear flavor for their Juicy Pear jelly bean?! No wonder it makes for such a sweet choice for this recipe…

How to Make Pear Butter

Pear Butter

Simply cook pears down with a little brown sugar, lemon juice, and warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Then, blend using a standard blender, immersion blender, or your food processor. Pour into jars and store in the fridge for up to a week. We recommend our Green D’Anjou Pears. Our D’Anjou pears are grown in some of the best pear-growing locales of the Wenatchee and Entiat River valleys as one variety of Stemilt’s Rushing Rivers® pears. The cool river breeze and warm, sunny days help our pears develop crisp, juicy flavors. They’re some of the best for fresh eating or baking into a vitamin-rich recipe like pear butter. We love D’Anjou pears for baking because they are sweet. And with plenty of fresh citrus flavor they make for a delicious, bright-tasting spread.

Instructions

For Pear Butter:

  1. Add all ingredients to a large saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and reduce heat to low.
  2. Place a lid over the top, leaving a crack for steam to escape, and simmer for about 45 minutes, until it has reduced slightly and thickened. Keep an eye on it and stir occasionally so it doesn’t burn.
  3. Remove from heat and transfer to a food processor or blender.
  4. Pulse until it’s as smooth as you wish (it can be completely smooth or you can leave it chunky).
  5. Transfer to jars or other containers, seal, and refrigerate until ready to use. Keep for up to a week.
  6. Note: Pear butter can be frozen for up to a year.

For Waffles:

  1. Preheat waffle iron.
  2. Whisk eggs until homogeneous. Whisk in flour, milk, oil, sugar, baking powder, salt and vanilla, just until smooth.
  3. Spray preheated waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray. Pour mix onto hot waffle iron.
  4. Cook according to manufacturer instructions. Repeat with remaining batter.
  5. Top with Stemilt D’Anjou Pear Butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon, if desired.
