One of my favorite ways to eat apples is in classic homemade pies, especially during the holidays. But when I’m stuffed full of sweet apple recipes, I like to experiment with the fruit in a non-traditional way, by turning it into a savory dish!
Since each apple variety differs based on its flavor characteristics, you can find an apple for any dish you want to make. When I bake apple pies and other sweet treats, I tend to lean toward our flavor-packed Piñata apple or the go-to Granny Smith apple. But when I pair apples with savory ingredients, the sky’s the limit – I can grab just about any variety!
Today I’m using our Stemilt apples to cook one of my favorite seasonal side dishes, Roasted Apples, Potatoes and Sausage with Maple Mustard Glaze. I came across the original recipe on Healthy Seasonal Recipes and have since prepared it for all of our holiday parties, experimenting with different apple varieties and ingredients each time. My favorite variety to cook into this dish has been Honeycrisp, as it pairs well with the savory sausage and sweet maple syrup. Feel free to try out different apple varieties based on the level of sweetness you want in this side dish!
